Football in the Boys' Brigade Exhibition opened by Mayor

On Thursday 14th May 2026, the Mayor officially opened the new “Football and The Boys’ Brigade” exhibition at the BB Museum in Carrickfergus.

The exhibition explores the long connection between football and The Boys’ Brigade, featuring memorabilia, photographs, jerseys and stories from across East Antrim and beyond.

Trustees, volunteers and guests gathered for the opening as the Mayor praised the work of the museum in preserving and sharing local Boys’ Brigade heritage for future generations.

The chair of the charity Drew Buchanan MBE said "Today we officially open our new exhibition, Football and The Boys’ Brigade. This exhibition celebrates the important role football has played within The Boys’ Brigade over many generations, bringing together stories, memorabilia, photographs and memories from across the years.

I would like to thank our trustees for their continued support and encouragement in helping make this exhibition possible. In particular, I want to pay special tribute to Donald for the many hours of research and work he carried out preparing the text and information for the display boards. His dedication and attention to detail have greatly enhanced this exhibition.

I also wish to thank all our volunteers and supporters who continue to help the Boys’ Brigade Museum grow here in Carrickfergus.

It now gives me great pleasure to invite the Mayor to officially open our exhibition, Football and The Boys’ Brigade."

The Mayor Replied "It is a great pleasure to be here today and to join with you in the BB Museum for the opening of this exhibition celebrating the connection between football and The Boys' Brigade.

Both have played an important role in the lives of young people for generations, shaping character, encouraging teamwork, and building strong communities.

With the World Cup beginning in June, this exhibition feels particularly timely.

Football has a unique ability to bring people together across ages and backgrounds, and The Boys' Brigade has long shared that same commitment to inclusion, discipline, and service.

This exhibition highlights how sport has supported the work of the BB both locally and internationally.

I would like to commend the volunteers and trustees of the BB Museum for their dedication in preserving and sharing this important heritage. Their work ensures that these stories are not lost, but continue to inspire future generations.

It now gives me great pleasure to officially declare this exhibition open, and I encourage everyone to take time to enjoy the displays, share memories, and celebrate this rich part of our community life.
